Your Horse's Comfort and Yours Is Paramount
Everyone should start with the basic tack and clothes, making sure that they fit comfortably. Obviously a horse that is going to be ridden needs a bridle, with a suitable bit and saddle. They must be well made, fit correctly, and in very good repair. An indication of this is that they are made of good quality leather, carefully maintained by cleaning with saddle soap. Do not be tempted to use an item of tack just because other people are using it; you should only use what your horse really needs.
There are many different kinds of saddles, but for comfort, fitting and lasting capabilities, choose the highest quality workmanship and materials. The Western saddle is sturdy and down-to-earth solid, with stronger and thicker leather than its English counterpart. Like the saddle, the bridle should be made from strong, flexible leather with rigid stitching that is even and firm, with quality stainless steel buckles rather than plated metal. The bridle and bit will allow you to control your horse's head. It should be properly adjusted, so that the horse is not uncomfortable. Your horse should have his own saddle and bridle, adjusted to fit, and kept in good condition.
It is surprising how little the basics have changed over the centuries. Bits have become less harsh, and saddles are now made with sprung trees and softer padding. However, the tack used in this century is based on a simple, effective and centuries-old design that works as well now as ever before.
Protecting Your Horse
There are special items of tack that can help protect the horse from discomfort and injury. Saddle pad, boots, and bandages all have their specific uses, but do not use them to compensate for poorly fitted tack or careless riding. Items that have a purpose for comfort and safety are important. Fashion accessories are secondary. Each has a purpose but both can cause or mask damage if used incorrectly, so please do not use them just because other people do. It is right to put protective boots on the horse for show jumping and cross-country, where he is likely to knock his legs, and the boots give protection against blows. Under the saddle most riders use cotton or wool saddlecloths to keep sweat and dirt off the saddle. Saddle pads at the back give extra shock absorption under the whole saddle, while wither pads are used at the front only. Also useful if the horse's weight fluctuates and affects the fit of the saddle. Placing the saddle cloth slightly too far forward, over the withers, smoothes the horse's hair when you slide the saddle back.
Dealing With Tack Trouble
No-one likes to think about the problems that could occur while out riding. A stirrup leather could break but you should not worry; you may be able to ride home gently and quietly without it. However, if there are breakages in any other areas of the tack, this is more of a problem. For example, a broken girth strap would mean you would have to lead the horse home, holding the saddle on the horse's back. You should in this instance, run up the stirrups and secure the firth, in order that it does not flap.
You can deal with broken reins by knotting it if the break is near the buckle; this gives you the opportunity of holding both reins. However, if the break falls in any other place, you will have to dismount your horse and then lead him. A more serious break in any part of the bridle, other than the noseband breaks, you will then lose control of your horse. If you have in your possession a piece of baler twine, that would be handy to provide a superficial mend to get you home with the horse. Warning - do not under any circumstances try to ride if your bridle is broken. Do try and ask for help by 'phone if you are too far away or near a busy road that you have to negotiate.
After your horse ride or leading your horse home do not remove your horse's saddle immediately when he is sweaty; you want to avoid your horse getting sores on his back. Your horse's back circulation is important - it may have slowed down after riding him. A few minutes is all your horse should need to come back to normal.

Are You Searching For The Perfect Riding Horse?
To save you the time and money finding that perfect horse, I shall tell you the truth; the 'perfect horse' does not exist. Even the greatest looking 'well bred' horses fall short of the mark. Before you go to great expense of buying a horse, you need to consider how much commitment and time you will be investing in your riding career. You can even evaluate how good a rider you are, and how much you really know about horses and horse care. All the above are more important than the amount of money and time spent 'upfront'. At the start you have to be honest with yourself; do you need the training to become a better rider? Do you need books and videos to look at the theory of horse riding to begin with? You need to really consider this huge commitment.
Your Horse
Some people search for a black horse, some look for a white horse, others a grey horse. For the perfect riding horse there are 3 main ingredients: conformation, temperament and time. Generally you do not have to search for too long; as long as the horse has a reasonable conformation and a nice temperament, which is all that matters at this stage. With training and time spent with your new companion, it is possible to create a wonderful riding horse from almost any horse you choose. What size and age of horse would work best for your riding?
Now that you have fallen in love with a flashy looking equine - his conformation is great and so is his balance. You notice that your horse has the potential to progress quickly and easily, to get the results you want. What will you do next? Is your horse a happy horse? His conformation may be great but if he is an unhappy horse, he will not be much fun riding. Check the horse's temperament: is he quiet, feisty, pushy, amenable, or grumpy? If this is your first time with horses and you are not very comfortable with them, my advice is not to get a pushy horse, as you will find it ruling you, and not the other way around. When you have found your dream horse what do you want to achieve and is THIS the horse for you? Are you going to be horse racing, horse riding, hunting, driving, barrel racing, or jumping? Are you going to ride at all? Are you learning to ride or improving your riding skills? You can also get horses just to drive.
If you are not comfortable with horses, do not get a pushy horse, as you will find it ruling you and not the other way around. Temperament is important. When your horse is willing to work with you and is open to learning and trying out new things, it then becomes so much easier to further his training and progress. You both have to share the journey and experiences; you both have to enjoy the riding experience. Your horse's character and spirit must shine through, and you must feel in control of him.
A word of advice: if you do not have horse experience, then do not buy a young horse and try to train it. One reason is that you will be more comfortable with an experienced horse and also for safety reasons to yourself and your horse. Wait until you have more experience or you will have to pay the price for your mistakes - such as injuries to you and your horse because you did not know what you were doing. Take an experienced friend with you to check out horses. They can help you assess the horse so you do not end up buying a horse that is way too much for you to handle. Your experienced friend can also ride the horse for you to assess if it would work for you. If the current owner is riding the horse, and they insist you do not need to try the horse - do not walk away from them - run away from them as quickly as possible!
When you have your horse what matters most is what you actually do with your horse, and how much time you put in. If you do not train him or do very much with him, he will not become a very good riding horse. You have searched for your perfect riding horse; don't you want to ride him too? If you are learning to ride take a look at your videos and books. Now you have the theory you are ready to go. Finally, you may not have thought about this, but in reality, every time you sit on your horse, you are training it, either in a good way or in a bad one.

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot: Your Horse In The Sun
When the sun is out and it is a hot summer's day, there is a routine that should be followed to take care of your horse's needs. Your horse can become hot and sweaty in the sun or when you have been riding him. A horse that is sweaty will need to be dried and any sweat marks removed from his coat. Dry sweat is very uncomfortable for any horse, which could lead to scalding and attract flies. Hot horses enjoy a quick sponge down in the heat, but they must be dried thoroughly with a sweat scraper. You can use a sweat scraper by removing excess water from the neck and body with a sweat scraper. Next put a wicking cooler or fleece rug on the horse, then towel-dry his face gently. Do not brush a wet mane. Your horse's heels must be checked for heat and lumps, and dried carefully to prevent any irritation of the skin such as cracked heels - run your hands down your horse's tendons to check.
No horse benefits from riding him hot and sweaty; dismount and walk. This is good for the horse's training because associating going home with going fast, feeling hot and sweaty can lead to behavioural problems - this remedy will help your horse to cool off and relax, restoring his circulation in the meantime.
As you become more and more familiar with your own horses, you already know that there are so many things that you need to be aware of, and the different conditions that you have to watch out for and to check. There is only so much you can do for your horse out in the hot weather. For example if you owned a dog or a cat, you can take them inside when it is very hot or very cold, but with a horse this is different; you have to make decisions based on what you can do. A barn is one place to take them into, bearing in mind how the weather is affecting your horse, and watching for heat stress in your horse.
Horses can be affected by the extremely hot weather, so you must ensure that your horse always has plenty of shade, and plenty of water. If you are living somewhere that it is very hot, you have to ensure that you take precautions so that the heat does not affect your horse too much. There are several things that you can do to make sure that your horse handles the heat as well as he can. For instance, whether it is hot or cold day, any temperature is going to make a working horse hotter. Working makes your horse use all of his muscles and expand more energy. If your horse is working, he is going to get hotter. On very hot days, you have to ensure that you are resting your horse, and an idea would be to turn him out to pasture, because chances are he will not work any harder than he should. The best solution is to try and avoid riding him or making him do any work on very hot days, although it is a temptation for some riders. Going through your horse riding videos or books would be an excellent way to train until you are ready for the "hands-on" experience once again.
As we all know, horses need to have fresh and safe water that is there for them at all times. You have to be sure that you are refilling your horse's water, especially when it is hot, and that it is kept cool. Warm water will not be as good for him as cool water will be.
Finally remember that your horse depends on you to protect him from the heat. Be sure that you have done your research so that you know what the best ways are to keep your horse cool and safe when it is hot outside, and ensure that you follow through with these tips so that your horse remains healthy and happy.

Understanding Dressage and Horses
Advice on Dressage and Horses
Dressage is the fastest growing equestrian activity today. It covers training the rider, training the horse and preparing for dressage competitions. Classical riding and training methods have survived for hundreds of years, largely passed down by word of mouth. These techniques have been proven to do the greatest good for the greatest number of horses. It is all about the gradual, systematic and gymnastic development of the horse. The emphasis is all about training the rider, explaining the basic riding skills, which will enable riders to develop their horse's talents. Dressage appeals to all riders looking for humane and sympathetic approaches to riding and training their horses.
Dressage horses for sale
Buying a horse is real business. Aside from the initial expenses that you would incur, there are other maintenance costs that are relatively taxing. This is why you must be very decisive when buying a horse, especially dressage horses.
While we may benefit from on-sale items, we still must discern if we would profit in the long run. Before indulging yourself with the least expensive horse at your glance, be sure that you are secured with your choice and that you will have no regret in the end. As we have said, buying a horse, any type of horse for that matter, is a taxing business. You would not want risking your money over an old horse that can't speed up while on track.
One of the major considerations when selecting an option for al horse is its speed. After all, horses are bought normally with speed in mind, not on the beauty of might or elegance of your steed but on its agility and performance. You are against no subjective rules while on racetrack but your bane is the time. Thus, you must give priority on how fast the horse for sale can go.
You should also put in mind the training a horse for sale has gone. Early discipline is vital with a dressage horse as this is not only a discipline-based event for horses; it also incorporates focus while on track. Earlier during the selection, you should ask for some display of skills.
There are horses that have problematic temperament, regardless if they are oriented to dressage. Even some of the best can present difficult behaviours at times. Common problems include hesitance before the competition, which may manifest during the onset of the game or the ending of the competition itself.
Some horses can be very aggressive which leads to missing the angles that must be hit to be able to perform the cloverleaf pattern perfectly.
Others, on the other hand, could be hard headed with following commands during the dressage level. Thus, common mistakes occur. Still others can be very timid or too deviant during the end of the competition, which could then result to delayed acceleration towards the finish. Put in mind that a slight delay due to the horse's hesitation while on the arena would mean lesser points on your end. Thus, you must check into the temperament of your prospect horse. Lower price is nice but if this would endanger your performance then it would be better if you go with much priced barrel horse with greater capacities.
Dressage tests:
Another problem commonly encountered with horses is their tendency to become tired of training. It won't hurt if you would ask bits of information about the horse's background. This way, you would know how to get around the stuffs that would stress the steed. Say, sudden change of environment would be detrimental for the horse.
As much as possible, if the horse got fixed with a specific atmosphere that has proven to be healthy for him, make it a point that this same environment can be partly adopted. In such case, you would need ample assistance from the previous owner of the horse.
Lastly, but certainly not among the least consideration is the justification of the price. Too low price, considering that the horse is for sale might imply lesser efficiency on the horse's part. High commanding price may also be too advantageous. Either way, you must discern things properly.

Looking For That Perfect Dressage Saddle For Your Horse?
Saddles are usually made of wood, with the majority of saddles based around a structure called the tree, and the tree must fit the horse. Forget about cheap saddles. Why?
Because quite literally, you DO get what you pay for if you buy a cheap saddle. And it's not just that you will be uncomfortable, but it will not make your horse all that happy either, and may actually do him harm. Ok you've tried cheap and figured out that isn't the way to go. You've tried expensive and, well, that worked, but holy smokes are the prices ever high. So here are some tips on how to shop for your next saddle.
Saddles can be priced from several hundred dollars to more than $8,500 - specialty or antique saddles can easily range into the tens of thousands. You're not going to be spending that kind of money, but you DO want to spend enough to get something decent and something that properly fits your horse. You will want to look for value, fit, fit and fit. Yes that's right, the most important thing about your saddle is that it fits right. Look at it this way, if you had something that was too tight or too big, you would feel very uncomfortable.
Why would you want to saddle your horse with something that doesn't fit? Before you go hunting, know the kind of saddle you want. Don't just have a vague idea of what might work, - have in mind a picture of precisely what you want. Then hit the road and start looking for the right fit. The saddle must fit you, the rider. English or western, jumping or cutting, pleasure or gaming, you must be comfortable in the saddle all the time. You don't want to be thinking about your saddle when you are riding. The right fit makes your saddle seem like a natural extension of your butt. If the saddle doesn't fit your horse, no matter how great the price, it was too much to pay.
If you're looking at ready-made saddles, then make sure you have the try it before you buy it option. If they won't let you try it, don't bother - after all you don't need to ride the horse more than a few minutes to determine fit. And if you put a pad under it and handle it carefully, you won't damage it. If the saddle is custom built, the saddle maker will want measurements of your horse in order to determine the proper tree, skirt lengths, gullet, etc. This is where you will be paying out good money.
Emphasize the good, because what you get will be precisely what you need, and what your horse needs. Having said that, the price must fit your budget. And just because your budget is low does not mean you can't find a saddle that has a proper fit. It just means spending the time to find it. Try this: if you are ordering a custom built saddle, tell the saddle maker the highest amount you'll pay, and then let him design to fit the budget.
Saddle makers can be very creative and stay within the budget. Or try buying a used saddle that FITS, and is eye-catching. That is often a better value than a new saddle. Are you into silver? Then only go with sterling because the silver-plated doodads and other imitations fade like crazy and are a waste of money. Just remember the saddle you want needs to FIT. That's what you need and that's what you want!

Words of advice to horse lovers
The Dressage Arena
Inside the arena is one of the most difficult moments at a competition for both the rider and the horse. The time immediately before entering the arena is the most crucial. You hope that the horse has worked is ready to do its best. But it is very easy for the horse to switch off between the warming-up area and the competition arena. You have to be alert with particularly young or inexperienced horses and ponies. They will be wary of any new arena, and may well lose their confidence and concentration when entering this new place.
In training, frequently give your horse an opportunity to switch off, then find ways of bringing it back to attention. This is beneficial at competitions, when you will need to bring the horse back again to do its best following a break. When you are about to enter the arena, try, as quickly as possible, to bring the horse correctly on the aids again. This is another situation where as the rider and trainer, you need to really know your horse.
With young horses or a pony it is vital that the rider treat the competition arena as a training ground. If the horse does something unacceptable, it has to be corrected (as he would be at home). If the horse get the idea that you, as the rider will allow him to misbehave in the arena, the horse's behaviour or the pony's behaviour, will gradually get worse. Some novice riders think that they must do nothing in the arena. The equestrian dressage, however, will realize that if something is going wrong it needs to be corrected immediately.
Now that both rider and horse have entered the arena, they should make sure that the horse's boots or bandages are removed and your rider's jacket is buttoned up. Have a few calming thoughts, then you are off!
And Finally
Wherever you are placed at the end of the event, remember dressage competitions are a test of the horse's training and provide an opportunity to receive expert observations of an independent judge.
Frequently a rider will be thrilled with a fairly low placing in a test in which the horse did its best and showed improvements. On the other hand, another rider may be unhappy with a winning test that he did not consider to be that good. Winning may be the well-deserved regard for all the time and patience put into systematically training a horse, but it should not in itself be the primary aim. If the performance of the horse or pony was disappointing, do not automatically blame the horse or pony. Instead, try to view the test dispassionately; try to see the good points as well as the bad. Think about what you could have done better, and how you will improve next time.
It is very important that the principles of sound training (dressage) are clearly understood by riders, teachers and judges.
Training should be kept as simple and clear as possible, with no secret about the correct thing to do - just dedication on your part. I hope that this article will help make the life of your horse or your horses more comfortable. As I wish you good riding and happy horses.
